Most fashion brands want you to notice them. Rei Kawakubo built an entire label around the opposite instinct.

She founded Comme des Garcons in Tokyo in 1969, and from the start it operated on its own terms. While everyone else was working out all the kinks in what 'luxury' should look like, Kawakuki was pulling at the threads of the assumptions... raw hems, misshaped silhouettes, unfinished clothes on purpose. It was a topic still beyond the scope of critics' vocabulary.

It was in 1981 that Paris saw for the first time. The response was divided, sometimes hostile. Words like "Hiroshima chic" got thrown around. But something had cracked open in fashion that season, and the designers who came after in luxury, in streetwear, in menswear have been working in that light ever since, whether they'd admit it or not.

Most people don't come to the brand through any of that history, though. They stumble onto it.

You see a pair of hands wearing a hoodie with a small heart embroidered on it, and you're having to look twice. Pair of Converse are familiar yet slightly off and so on it takes you a moment to determine why Converse shoes look that way. A friend reaches for the same cardigan every time you see them. CDG doesn't announce itself. You just start noticing it.

Comme des Garçons Play

The Comme des Garçons Play launched in 2002. Not as a cheaper version of CDG, more like a different door into the same building. T-shirts, hoodies, cardigans, sneakers everyday stuff, made with the same seriousness the brand had always applied to runway pieces.

The heart logo is from Polish artist Filip Pagowski. Small, slightly ‘weird’ looking, unmistakable once spotted. It's on a white tee, and somehow doesn't feel like branding. Still doesn't, over twenty years later.

People sometimes assume it's all about the logo. Talk to anyone who's owned a few Play pieces for a while and you get a different story. They'll mention the weight of the cotton. How a hoodie softened after six months of washing without losing its shape. How they still find it on the shoulders when they have more exciting, new items to purchase. That's what is not visible in pictures.

Why Comme des Garçons Play is Different 

Fashion mostly runs on a three-month cycle. Something drops, everyone wants it, then it's forgotten by the time the next thing arrives.

CDG operates on a completely different timeline. A Play hoodie you bought in 2020 looks exactly as good now. The cardigans go from October layering to under-a-coat January without skipping a beat. The T-shirts hold their shape through years of washing in a way that fast-fashion cotton just doesn't.

There's a lot of skill in making something that doesn't age poorly. CDG has been doing it long enough that people have stopped treating it as a selling point and started treating it as a given.

Authenticity — How We Check

Counterfeits have gotten genuinely hard to spot. Good ones now pass in photographs. The difference only shows when you have the real thing in your hands.

We check every piece in person. The heart embroidery is the tell most fakes get wrong there's a particular shape and expression to it that's harder to reproduce than it looks. After that: stitching, interior labels, fabric weight, tag placement, how the seams are finished. One detail doesn't confirm anything on its own. You need the whole garment to add up.

Genuine Play hoodies have a specific density to the cotton that changes with wear rather than just degrading. Real cardigans use lambswool that holds its structure. These aren't minor variations. They're the difference between something that lasts and something that doesn't.

CDG Hoodie

Most people start here. The design is deliberately restrained clean cotton, heart on the chest, nothing else competing for space. That simplicity is what's kept it relevant for over two decades, which is longer than most fashion statements last.

The fabric is the thing that gets people. Denser than expected, with a real weight to it. It doesn't feel stiff. After a few months it softens in a way that feels earned, not worn out, just broken in properly.

One important thing before ordering: Play follows Japanese sizing and it runs genuinely slim, not just slightly slim. Size up once for a normal fit. Size up twice if you like room or plan to layer underneath.

Comme des Garcons Shirt

The Comme des Garcons Shirt is where most first purchases happen, and it's usually the piece that stays in heaviest rotation years later.

No graphic, no oversized logo. Clean shirt, embroidered heart, proportions that actually work. It goes with nearly everything without requiring any particular thought about the outfit. Denim, tailored trousers, under a jacket, on its own on a warm day.

The cotton is noticeably heavier than anything from fast fashion. It hangs properly. After two years of regular washing it still looks like itself which is not something you can say about most T-shirts.

Collaboration tees with Stüssy, BAPE, Chrome Hearts and Futura appear occasionally. They don't tend to hang around.

CDG Polo Shirts

CDG Polos get less attention than hoodies or sneakers, but they solve a specific problem well. Too casual for a shirt, too put-together for a T-shirt that is a middle ground where you need something that works without overthinking it.

Cotton piqué, clean lines, the heart at the chest. The branding is quiet enough that it reads as a well-made polo rather than a branded one.

Black and white are the reliable year-round options. Navy, grey and burgundy come in seasonally. Sizing is slim like everything else size up once.

CDG Cardigan

Ask someone who's been buying CDG for years which piece they wear most and the CDG cardigan comes up far more often than you'd think. Not because it's flashy, but because it never becomes the wrong choice.

October over a T-shirt. January under a heavier coat. Smart or casual, it handles both. The lambswool holds its shape without going stiff. The knit doesn't pill badly or stretch out across the shoulders after a few wears. It just keeps working.

Double Heart versions exist if you want a slightly more visible take on the design. The standard range black, navy, camel, off-white covers most needs.

CDG Long Sleeves

The CDG Long sleeve tees live in the gap between summer and proper cold weather. Not glamorous, but practical in the way that means you keep reaching for them when the seasons are ambiguous.

Same slim Japanese cut as the rest of the Play range, so size up here too. They sit cleanly under jackets and overshirts. On their own they don't look like a fallback option the proportions are right.

CDG Converse

This started in 2009 and is still going because it worked from the beginning and there was no reason to change it. The CDG Converse Chuck 70 already had the right silhouette with decades of history behind it, a shape that hadn't dated. Pagowski's heart gave it something new without messing with what made the shoe good in the first place.

Seventeen years on, it still doesn't feel like an era piece. You can wear it with denim, tailored trousers or tracksuit bottoms and it fits. That's rarer than it sounds.

We stock Converse High Top and Converse Low Top Chuck 70s in black, white and grey. Multi Heart variations and limited runs come in when they're available but move fast.

Sizing: slightly narrower across the forefoot than standard Converse. If you're between sizes or your feet run wide, go up half a size.

Samba Comme des Garcons

Most collaborations do too much. CDG did the opposite with the Samba Comme des Garcons, left the silhouette alone, upgraded the materials, and kept the branding restrained. The shoe still looks like a Samba. Just a noticeably better one.

Production runs smaller than standard Adidas releases so specific sizes and colourways go fast. If there's a particular version you want, waiting usually doesn't help.

CDG Bag

Same thinking as the clothing practical shapes, materials that hold up over time, nothing relying on a logo to do the work. CDG Backpacks, totes and seasonal pieces that suit commuting and daily use. Black nylon for people who want something that disappears into any outfit. Collaborative pieces for something with more personality.

Everything gets the same inspection as the clothing before it ships.

CDG Jacket

CDG outerwear is where you notice the attention to proportion most clearly. Even the simpler pieces show it the way a collar sits, how the CDG jacket moves, where the seams land. Things you register without consciously clocking them.

Collaborative runs with The North Face are made in limited quantities. Specific styles that sell out tend to stay sold out.

Are your products authentic?

Yes. Every piece is inspected individually before it's listed embroidery, labels, stitching, fabric, construction. All of it.

Does CDG Play run small?

Yes, genuinely small. Japanese sizing. Most people who go by their usual size regret it. Size up once at minimum.

Are the Converse true to size? 

Chuck 70 base, but narrower. Half a size up if you're unsure or between sizes.

How should I wash CDG clothing? 

Check the label. Cold wash, inside out, avoid high heat in the dryer. Knitwear should be folded not hung, hanging pulls the shoulders out of shape over time.

Will things come back in stock?

Core Play pieces restock when production allows. Collaborations and limited colorways usually don't come back once they're gone.

What should I buy first? 

Depends entirely on what you wear. A T-shirt or hoodie is the easiest starting point. If you run cold or layer a lot, the cardigan might be more useful. No single right answer.

CDG has been making the same kind of clothing for fifty years, things that don't try to impress you immediately but hold up indefinitely. Play made that available in pieces people can wear every day.

Take your time looking through. The piece you'll still be wearing in four years is rarely the one that grabs you first.
